BMW turbos can heighten the horsepower on your car’s engine significantly so if you’re looking for a bit of a boost for your wheels, this is the best way to go about it. But how exactly do turbochargers work? We reveal all right here.
What makes turbos especially popular is the fact that they can soup up your horsepower without increasing the weight of your engine all that much – obviously beneficial if you want to go at super speeds.
Basically, a turbocharger is a forced induction system, working by compressing the air that flows into the engine – meaning that more air can be squeezed into the cylinder by the engine, so more fuel can be added. The more fuel you get, the more power you get so an engine with a turbocharger can produce more power than the same engine without one. Awesome!
Turbochargers use the engine’s exhaust flow to spin a turbine up to 150,000 rotations per minute, which is significantly faster than the majority of normal car engines can go.
If you want to find out more about how turbochargers work, head online where you’ll find lots of videos showing you exactly what goes on after you’ve added one to your car.
And if you’re having a bit of trouble with your car and your turbocharger, head to our website where you’ll find some frequently asked questions and their answers to help you work out what’s going on with your wheels. It may well be that you have a blocked breather, which you’ll need to get sorted as soon as possible.
